Its existence is mentioned by historians and writers of antiquity such as Thucydides, Polybius, Cicero in the Verrine Orations, and Silius Italicus in the work Punica, confirming the importance this territory already held in the classical era.

The current town was established in 1683 following a tragic event. On June 6, 1682, a violent landslide destroyed the old settlement, forcing the population to abandon the original site. It was the Duke of Camastra who granted the citizens the land on which to build the new city, personally designing the urban layout inspired by the rational models of the time and the geometries that characterized the famous Versailles.

With the foundation of the new center, a profound economic and social transformation began. The inhabitants, traditionally dedicated to agriculture and sheep farming, progressively developed new activities related to fishing and, above all, ceramic craftsmanship, destined to become one of the most representative elements of the city’s identity.

The abundant presence of clay favored the growth of production activities. Traces of ancient kilns and numerous documentary records suggest that ceramic production was present in the territory as early as the Arab era, long before the birth of the current Santo Stefano di Camastra.

Over the centuries, the city’s production heart has shifted several times, following the needs of manufacturing and trade. The artisan shops and workshops — the traditional putìi and stazzuna — were initially established near the embarkation points by the sea, then close to the clay extraction areas, and subsequently along the main communication routes, facilitating the transport of goods to the rest of Sicily.

This long artisanal tradition has helped transform Santo Stefano di Camastra into one of the capitals of Sicilian artistic ceramics, a place where history, creativity, and labor continue to merge today into a unique and internationally recognized cultural heritage.

Tourist Route

Visiting Santo Stefano di Camastra means immersing yourself in a place where ceramics are an integral part of the urban landscape and the community’s identity. Here, master potters continue to shape clay and fire according to traditional Sicilian techniques, creating works strictly decorated by hand that contribute to making the city’s face unique.

An essential stop is the Ceramics Museum, inaugurated in 1994 and housed within the historic Palazzo del Barone Sergio, in Piazza Duca di Camastra.
