The first artisan workshops were primarily dedicated to the production of building materials and terracotta pottery for daily use, utilizing the resources and skills passed down within the territory.

Only later did the craftsmanship evolve toward the production of true ceramic artifacts, giving rise to an original style that would come to characterize the local tradition.

During the 19th century, Collesano became an important center for the production of folk pottery, marketed especially at the fairs of western Sicily. The objects created by master artisans were appreciated for their functionality, as well as for the creativity of their forms and decorations. Surfaces were embellished with characteristic yellow, green, and manganese colors, while the artisans’ imagination transformed oil lamps into elegant ladies and knights, flasks into vegetables, and vases into compositions rich with relief-molded leaves and flowers.

This ability to combine tradition, art, and folk spirit has made Collesano ceramics an authentic expression of the cultural identity of the Madonie region.

Today, the tradition continues thanks to the activity of the artisan workshops present in the area. In recent years, the promotion of the ceramic tradition has represented an important driver for tourism development, helping to rediscover the rich cultural heritage and identity of the town.

The best way to get to know Collesano is to explore its streets on foot, letting yourself be guided by the alleys, squares, and places that tell centuries of history. The beating heart of the village is Piazza Mazzini, the ancient town forum and today a reference point for residents and visitors. The Tourist Office is also located here, serving as an ideal starting point for exploring the area. Must-see stops include the numerous historic churches and the Basilica Minore, which house works of art of great value and bear witness to the religious and cultural importance of the Collesano community.

Particularly evocative is the route dedicated to the ceramic tradition, a true Via della Ceramica (Ceramics Way) that crosses the historic center. The itinerary begins in the Stazzone district, where the ancient kilns were located, and continues toward Piazza Castello, featuring the Spire of Santa Maria la Vecchia and the ancient Moncada quarter. The route continues through the Stellario district, the historic home of ceramic workshops, and develops along some of the village’s most representative streets, including Via Roma, Viale Vincenzo Florio, Via Isnello, and Via Polizzi.

In Piazza Santa Maria di Gesù, visitors can admire ceramic panels dedicated to the legendary Targa Florio, while along Via Polizzi, there is a scenic staircase entirely covered in ceramics, decorated with the colors and motifs typical of the Collesano tradition. Also along Viale Vincenzo Florio, the elegant ceramic welcome sign stands out as a symbol of the village’s hospitality.

Within and around the town center are the artisan workshops that still keep the local tradition alive: Ceramiche Iachetta, Manganello Arte, Comed, and Cotto Meli, where it is possible to learn about production techniques firsthand and admire contemporary creations.

Throughout the urban route, visitors can discover numerous ceramic installations dedicated to the architectural, artistic, and religious assets of the territory, as well as panels recounting the traditional path of the Cerca, the evocative procession that takes place at dawn on Good Friday and represents one of the most deeply felt moments of Collesano spirituality. Walking through Collesano thus means immersing oneself in an open-air museum, where art, faith, traditions, and ceramics merge into an authentic and engaging experience.

Collesano Province: Palermo Tradition: Artistic and decorative Madonie ceramics Places to visit: Historic center, monumental churches, and artisan workshops Experiences: A journey through craftsmanship, sacred art, and local traditions The tradition of Collesano ceramics is rooted in a centuries-old history that has accompanied the economic and social life of this Madonie village for generations.
