Among them were Vincenzo Maurici with his son Matteo, Antonio Merlo, Bartolomeo Daidone, Pietro Gangarella, Giuseppe Savia, Nicola and Giovanni Maurici, the latter specialized in the construction of furnaces for tin calcination. They were later joined by Giacomo Sperlinga and Stefano Vinci, contributing to the birth of an artisan tradition destined to profoundly mark the history and identity of the town.

From that moment, ceramic production became one of the distinctive elements of Burgio, passed down from generation to generation to the present day and transforming the village into one of the most important centers of Sicilian artistic ceramics.

The first ceramic production in Burgio was naturally influenced by the tradition of Caltagirone, from which the masters who introduced this art to the village came. Over the centuries, the Burgitan workshops managed to maintain their own productive vitality, adapting to market changes and new customer needs.

While confronting the growing diffusion of artifacts from Naples and Vietri, already exported throughout Sicily in large quantities and produced with industrial techniques at low costs, the local workshops were able to preserve the quality and identity of their production. This ability to innovate without abandoning tradition has allowed Burgitan ceramics to traverse different historical periods, maintaining intact the connection with the territory and with the artisan knowledge passed down from generation to generation.

During the second half of the 19th century, the ceramic workshops of Burgio went through a period of difficulty. The finest production began to suffer from competition from industrial artifacts, produced at lower costs and increasingly widespread on the market.

Despite the crisis, artisan activity continued to thrive through the production of objects intended for everyday use. At local fairs and markets one could find bummuli, quartara, cannate, cannili di crita, as well as decorative graste for balconies and terraces and the characteristic nativity figurines, expressions of creativity and popular devotion.

Over the years, however, the growing presence of artifacts coming mainly from Naples and Vietri contributed to the progressive closure of many historic workshops. Despite this, the Burgitan ceramic tradition managed to survive, preserving a heritage of techniques, forms, and decorations that still today represents a fundamental element of the cultural identity of the territory.

The Muceb – Museum of Ceramics of Burgio was born from the desire to preserve, enhance, and pass down one of the most significant artisan heritages of the territory. The museum tells the long history of Burgitan ceramics and pays tribute to the generations of master artisans who, over the centuries, have contributed to making local production increasingly refined, appreciated, and recognizable.

Through its collections, the Muceb offers visitors a journey into the majolica tradition of Burgio, highlighting the evolution of production techniques, decorative forms, and artistic expressions that have characterized this important Sicilian ceramic center. Today the museum represents a fundamental reference point for the knowledge and promotion of the cultural and artisan identity of the territory.

Tourist Route

The origins of Burgio are closely linked to the history of its oldest monument: the Castle, built during the period of Arab domination in the highest part of the town. Subsequently conquered by the Normans, the fortress was rebuilt and became one of the symbols of the history and identity of the village.

Next to the Castle stands the evocative Mother Church, founded in the 12th century and dedicated to Saint Anthony the Abbot, patron saint of Burgio. From this extraordinary monumental complex, the discovery of the historic center can begin, among alleyways, artistic testimonies, and ancient traditions.

The Mother Church preserves a precious artistic heritage, including a refined Madonna and Child created by Vincenzo Gagini in 1568, important stucco decorations, and five monumental statues sculpted by Orazio Ferraro in 1596. Inside is also preserved an ancient wooden Crucifix, from the Sanctuary of Riesi and probably dating back to the 13th century. This place represents one of the fundamental stops for understanding the history, art, and spirituality that have accompanied the evolution of Burgio over the centuries.

A second unmissable stop on the route to discover Burgio is the complex of the Reformed Minor Friars, now home to the Muceb – Museum of Ceramics of Burgio. This cultural space tells the long ceramic tradition of the territory, preserving testimonies, artifacts, and works that document the evolution of one of the most important artisan expressions of Sicily.

Among the places of interest in the historic center, the Church of San Giuseppe also deserves a visit, one of the most significant examples of the local artistic heritage. The interior is embellished with a rich 17th-century decorative apparatus composed of frescoes and stuccos, while the barrel vault houses an evocative representation of Paradise that gives the space a particular charm.

Not to be missed is also the Church of San Vito, built in 1522, which preserves inside the celebrated statue of San Vito created by Antonello Gagini, one of the most important sculptors of the Sicilian Renaissance. These places, together with the Castle, the Mother Church, and the Muceb, compose an itinerary capable of telling the history, art, and cultural identity of Burgio, offering visitors an authentic experience in the heart of the Monti Sicani.

To experience an authentic immersive discovery of Burgio ceramics, an essential stop is the historic Caravella Workshop, one of the symbolic places of the town’s artisan tradition. Here time seems to have stood still. Among ancient work tools, kilns, and techniques passed down from generation to generation, visitors can come into direct contact with artisan knowledge that has its roots in the centuries.

The protagonist of this extraordinary reality is the master ceramist Paolo Caravella, recognized as Living Heritage of Sicily, who continues to create his works following the methods of the most ancient Burgitan tradition. His creations represent the authentic expression of an art that has been able to preserve its own identity over time, becoming one of the most precious cultural symbols of the territory. Visiting the Caravella Workshop means discovering firsthand the soul of Burgio ceramics and experiencing a unique journey through history, art, and artisan mastery.

BURGIO Province: Agrigento Tradition: Burgitan artistic ceramics Places to visit: Castle, Mother Church, Muceb, Caravella Workshop Experiences: Visit to artisan workshops and the majolica tradition of Burgio The ceramic tradition in Burgio has its roots in the late 16th century, when several families of ceramists from Caltagirone decided to relocate to the small town in…

"slide_template_v7":"
["post-1861","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.6 -
