The artistic ceramics of Sciacca between tradition and innovation. The hippopotamus, as an iconic figure in Michele Bono’s production, evokes the ancient iconography of African and Egyptian populations, but with a contemporary language that draws upon the Pop culture of the 1980s and advertising, making wild animal figures approachable and familiar.
The decoration also reinterprets the classical acanthus leaf, a typical motif of ancient Sciacca art ceramics, rendering it as a delicate texture in blue on a whitewashed background and ethereal in the use of slip-trailed dotting, with a nod to the delicate and elegant embroidery of Sicilian women’s linens from the past, handcrafted pure linen trousseaus.
The slip-trailed dotting also provides a tactile sensation that makes the surface both textured and velvety, creating a pleasant and unique sensory experience.
