The Sicilian Ceramic Routes arrive at the Royal Palace: showcasing the island’s artisanal excellence

After winning over audiences at the International Tourism Exchange and Milan Design Week, the installation “The Cities of Ceramics: Contemporary Visions of Sicilian Craftsmanship” arrives in the heart of Palermo, hosted in the evocative Maqueda Courtyard of the Royal Palace thanks to the Federico II Foundation. The exhibition offers an original visual journey that reinterprets the urban landscape through a composition of essential geometric shapes. Abstract volumes, inspired by contemporary architecture, bring to life an imaginary city that showcases the creations of Sicilian master ceramicists.

The presentation was attended by the President of the Sicilian Regional Assembly and the Federico II Foundation, Gaetano Galvagno; the Regional Councilor for Tourism, Sport, and Entertainment, Elvira Amata; and the mayors of the municipalities involved in the project: Francesco Re (Santo Stefano di Camastra), Vincenzo Galifi (Burgio), Tiziana Cascio (Collesano), Fabio Termine (Sciacca), and Fabio Roccuzzo (Caltagirone). The initiative was born as part of the “Sicilian Ceramic Routes” project, which brings together the island’s main cities that safeguard a centuries-old tradition: Burgio, Caltagirone, Collesano, Monreale, Santo Stefano di Camastra, and Sciacca. A cultural and artistic itinerary that enhances one of Sicily’s most representative heritage identities.

On display are unique artifacts that tell the story of the evolution of Sicilian ceramics, from traditional forms to contemporary interpretations. Works that go beyond the concept of a simple decorative object to become design elements capable of combining functionality, aesthetic research, and the memory of the territories they come from.

“Sicilian artistic ceramics represent one of the most authentic expressions of our cultural heritage,” stated Gaetano Galvagno. “This is an internationally recognized excellence, the result of the meeting between artistic creativity and artisanal wisdom. We chose to host this installation to offer visitors from all over the world the opportunity to admire the dialogue between the historical charm of the Royal Palace and the chromatic vibrancy of contemporary productions.”

The event was also enriched by a live demonstration of ceramic-making techniques. Teachers from the “Ciro Michele Esposito” Regional High School in Santo Stefano di Camastra showed the public the stages of wheel-throwing and artistic decoration, offering a direct experience of an art form that continues to represent one of the most authentic symbols of Sicilian identity.
